I have pretty well exclusively used the Canon XL1S 16X Digital Movie Camera in 16:9 format (my favorite). This format produces the closest to a "cinema like" feel for its class and with a full time job this is my initial investment.
I have several mics that I use both attached to the camera and in boom mode. I primarily use ATR shotgun mics for excellent directional sound.
With my basement as my editing studio, I use a good tube mic to do voice overs and other editorial business while in post production.
My editing software includes Avid as well as the good old Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 which has proven extremely reliable and versatile.
I've also accumulated quite the pile of props from shooting the Don't Let It End short movie along with several others.
